LCL vs FCL.What’s the difference?

You don’t always need a full container to ship by sea. Learn how shared and dedicated containers work, and choose an option that fits your shipment.

DMA Shipping Made Simple Post 3: LCL and FCL sea freight compared

Understand your options

Two ways to use a shipping container

Planning to send personal belongings, household goods or business cargo by sea? One of the first decisions is whether to share a container or reserve one for your shipment.

LCL stands for Less than Container Load. FCL stands for Full Container Load. Both are sea freight options, but they offer different approaches to space, cost and cargo handling.

The simple difference: LCL means sharing container space. FCL means a container allocated to your shipment.

LCL · Share the space

What is LCL shipping?

With LCL, your goods travel in a container alongside other shipments. Cargo is brought together for the sea journey and separated for onward delivery at the destination.

This can be a practical choice when you do not have enough goods to justify booking an entire container. It lets you explore sea freight for a smaller shipment without needing to increase your order or wait until you have more cargo.

When might LCL suit you?

  • Personal effects or a smaller household shipment.
  • Small business cargo and stock orders.
  • Trial shipments when testing a product or market.
  • Goods that occupy only part of a container.

LCL charges commonly depend on cargo volume or weight under the service’s pricing rules. Minimum charges, handling and other fees may also apply, so ask for a complete quote rather than comparing the freight rate alone.

FCL · A container just for you

What is FCL shipping?

With FCL, the container is allocated to your shipment rather than shared with other shippers. This offers dedicated space for larger quantities of cargo or goods that benefit from a separate container.

Despite the name “Full Container Load”, you do not have to fill every part of the container. You are booking the container, so the decision should reflect your cargo volume, requirements and the total cost.

When might FCL suit you?

  • Larger commercial cargo and stock shipments.
  • Large household moves.
  • Machinery and equipment, where suitable for container transport.
  • Vehicles, subject to service availability and applicable requirements.
  • Shipments that need dedicated container space.

For larger loads, FCL may offer a lower transport cost per unit. It is not automatically the cheapest option for every shipment; compare quotations for your actual goods and route.

Which option is right for you?
